One of the best ways to ruin your day is to find a crack in your windshield. Depending on the level of damage, you might be able to repair the glass, or you may need a whole new windshield. You’re here for the burning question, “Can a cracked windshield be repaired?”
To be honest, there isn’t one easy answer to this question, so we’ve put together this blog. After reading it and comparing your damage to what you’ve learned, you’ll have a good idea of whether or not you can repair your damaged windshield.
In many cases, the answer is yes. Some chips and cracks can be repaired, but it depends on several factors, which we’ll cover below.
Size: Whether or not you can repair the crack in your windshield largely depends on the size of the crack. In most cases, chips smaller than a quarter and cracks that measure less than a few inches can be repaired. But there are other factors to consider as well.
Depth: Windshields are made of two layers of glass with a layer of plastic in between. This design offers enhanced safety and structural integrity to a vehicle. In the event of a crash, the glass fragments will stay affixed to the plastic layer so the driver can maintain visibility and prevent injury. If the crack goes deep, you may need to replace the entire windshield.
Location: If the crack is in the driver’s direct line of sight or near the edge of the windshield, you will likely need a full replacement. By law, there can be no obstructions to the driver’s view. Damage near the edge can spread quickly, compromise the windshield’s seal, and weaken the structural integrity of the vehicle.
While there are some DIY windshield repair kits available online and at auto supply stores, we highly recommend hiring a professional auto glass company for your repair. Here’s why:
Expertise: Repairing windshields requires specific knowledge and tools. DIY kits may not have the right equipment because not all cracks and chips are the same. Also, ask yourself how many windshields you’ve repaired. It’s probably far less than an auto glass technician.
More Damage: While DIY may seem like a cost-effective solution, you could make a mistake that ends up costing you more in the long run. What if the DIY repair fails? The damage could spread, requiring a full windshield replacement. If that happens, it could void your manufacturer's warranty. Your insurance may not cover damage after a DIY repair, but they might cover a repair done by a professional auto glass technician.
No Guarantee: Many reputable auto glass companies offer a lifetime warranty. So if something goes wrong, you can bring your vehicle back. DIY kits don’t offer this, and if something goes wrong, you’ll end up needing professional help anyway.
Mobile auto glass services do just that. The technician will come to your home, work, or even the side of the road if needed. They offer the same services as in-shop auto glass companies but on wheels. Mobile auto glass services provide a level of convenience and speed you won’t find at a shop.
The technician works while you go about your day. At a shop, you’d be stuck in a waiting room thinking about all the things you could be doing. Plus, when a mobile auto glass technician comes to you, you are the only customer, so there are no distractions like ringing phones or other technicians to slow them down.
